Kaunda attended Dale Junior and went on to the high school at Dale College where he matriculated in 2000.

Teacher Glenn Harris remembers the early days at Dale Junior where a young Kaunda arrived at Dale Junior from Butterworth not wanting to play rugby at all. Glen quotes how he took him under his wing and encouraged him through his first season as a front row in Under 10. What a great player he turned out to be and a true gentleman in all aspects of life.

Kaunda played for the first team in 1998 and was part of the Dale College Rugby team that travelled to tour France at the end of that year.

Kaunda was in the 1999 Dale First XV Team which was a star studded team. He played with his very good friend Lonwabo (Black) Mtimka who also played SA Schools with him. To mention a few names that were in the team with him as well were; Mondi Zondeki who played for the Proteas, Nicholas (Nick) Eyre who played for the Lions, Bulls and SA Sevens, James Winstanley played for Border.

In 1999 Kaunda received the Honours Award and played SA Schools U18, which was a curtain raiser to the SA match against New Zealand.

A popular yet humble Old Dalian rugby star, he was a hard-playing player and went onto play for the Cheetahs before pioneering and commentating on rugby at top level on SuperSport channels and in isiXhosa.

Rugby coach in 2000 had this to say about Kaunda who played the flank position.

Quoted from his coach, “although many critics thought he played too loose, that was the game-plan and he stuck to it perfectly. It was through his awesome breaks into the midfield that many opportunities were created for other players. His charismatic style of play, together with is immeasurable talent, made him an exciting prospect to watch”.

At the 2000 prize-giving Kaunda received the prize for an outstanding performance in rugby.

Rugby achievements at school;

Dale First XV Honours 1999 Border Schools, Craven Week, South African Schools

Dale First XV Honours 2000 Border Schools, Craven Week Captain, South African Schools Captain

Dale Mentor: Mike Wesson was his under U/14, His under U/15 and 1999 Rugby Coach

Kaunda was an unassuming down to earth guy who was very popular amongst his peers, always willing to promote and support his old school.

It is true when they say “be so successful that you don’t have to introduce yourself”, that is exactly what Kaunda was, you would hear his voice on TV and you would immediately know it was him! He needed no introduction!

Kaunda was an extraordinary Old Dalian that has set the bar for many young people in rugby commentary, his community, Dale College Old Boys and the country at large.. We might have lost you Zizi, but we will never forget you, Lala ngoxolo Dlamini, Zizi, Xuza, Fakade, Jama!!

Kind regards
